Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner 2026: Feb. 16th, Food, Traditions
The Chinese New Year dinner also referred to as the "Reunion Dinner", called tuan nien fan or nian ye fan in Chinese, is perhaps the most loved aspect of the Spring Festival. It takes place on Chinese New Year's Eve (February 16th in 2026).
The Significance of the Reunion Dinner
If one were to choose only one day of the two-week-long Chinese New Year festival to go home to visit family, this would be it. The daytime before the reunion dinner (and immediately preceding days if the journey home is longer) see the most crowded roads, bus stations, train stations, and airports of the whole year, as everyone anxiously makes the journey to go home and be with their loved ones.
The dinner is believed to be the most important part of the festival and the most important meal of the year. Big families of several generations sit around round tables and enjoy the food and time together.
For people who work or study outside, the Chinese New Year reunion dinner is the best time to see their parents or grandparents. The reunion dinner gives elders the opportunity to catch up on how their children and grandchildren are doing.
Reunion Dinner Food and Drinks
The Spring Festival Reunion Dinner typically has enough food on the table to feed a whole village! It is common to see plates on top of plates of food.
There are many symbolic "lucky" dishes that most families will prepare, but the one food that is undoubtedly the most common is 'Jiaozi', or dumpling which means wealth. Families often like to prepare the dough and fillings for dumplings together before the New Year's feast.
Fish is another must-have dish for the reunion dinner for its auspicious meaning. In Chinese, "fish" (鱼 Yú /yoo/) sounds like 'surplus' and symbolizes abundance.

Drinking is also quite an integral part of the dinner, and even those who normally do not consume alcohol will join in on the fun! Bottles of Baijiu (Chinese rice wine) and other alcoholic spirits are likely to be drunk by the whole family.
The dinner also takes place over a long period of time, commonly starting as early as 17:00 - 17:30 (before sunset), and lasting all the way through midnight.

Besides the feast itself, the evening is filled with various exciting activities for the whole family.
The most anticipated TV broadcast of the year; CCTV's New Year Gala show, takes place at the same time (8pm - midnight), and will almost surely be watched by almost the whole country throughout the evening.
These hours are also the most common time for 'Red Envelope' of lucky money to be exchanged (both physically or electronically).
When the clock approaches midnight, the family would normally go outside to witness the spectacular display of fireworks and firecrackers that takes place. Many families will likely buy fireworks sets of their own to light up the sky and join in. The amazing scene can last for up to an hour in many rural areas and leaves the roads and ground completely covered with the red paper remains of the firecrackers, and with a heavy red-tinted layer of smoke covering the skies. It truly is a mesmerizing sight!
Midnight is also the time when the New Year bell is rung. Many areas, such as temples or large squares, may have bells, that are traditionally rung to mark the New Year's beginning. Some families may even choose to make a trip up to a mountain temple specifically to hear the bell rung, as it is believed to bring good fortune.
Where Do Chinese New Year Reunion Dinners Take Place?
Many people's parents, grandparents, or other extended-family relatives live in rural areas, usually in the outskirts of the big cities where the younger generations work or study, so it is customary for people to make the journey back to their laojia ('old home', i.e. hometown).
The reunion dinner will therefore most probably take place at the home of the parents/grandparents, and most commonly; the parents of the husband's side of the family for married couples, but this is not set in stone.
Nowadays, as many people (and their extended families) have left the countryside for good, many Chinese New Year celebrations may also take place in the big cities. In these cases, as preparing a meal at home may seem troublesome, families will instead choose to go dine at posh luxurious restaurants (if they are still open). >>

“As part of the CAMOC Archive Series, this exhibition presents the intimate correspondence between the Chinatown legend Bernarda “Bernie” Lo and her (then) boyfriend Albert Wong during the early years of their relationship.
While known as a force behind transformational community service work decades later, these letters show the quotidien beginnings of this American couple: two immigrants from Hong Kong whose love blossomed as they navigated life in the American Midwest during the 1960s. Through their ordinary letters—each one signed off “All my love”—this exhibition traces how love was understood, negotiated, and practiced within a shifting social landscape. Their private exchange invites us to imagine how they navigated the physical, social, and emotional terrains of transnational migration.
The exhibition brings the original letters, photographs, and personal artifacts from the CAMOC archives, and a video installation by Yuge Zhou. Along with new donations from their daughter, Jacinta Wong, they together create a space that invites intergenerational dialogue about love, memory, and the ongoing search for home.”

Tony Award winner and former Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls’ production of “Holiday” runs now through March 8, 2026 at The Goodman. This brand-new work by Richard Greenberg, the late Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist playwright, is based on Philip Barry’s (“The Philadelphia Story”) classic play that inspired the beloved 1930s film starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.

In “Holiday,” matters of the heart are a family affair in the wealthy world of the Upper East Side Setons— including patriarch Edward (Jordan Lage), sisters Julia (Molly Griggs) and Linda (Bryce Gangel) and brother Ned (Wesley Taylor). Enter Johnny Case (Luigi Sottile), a romantic prospect from a decidedly different background—and privilege, class and personal fulfillment are thrown into sharp relief asking the eternal question: work to live or live to work?
The cast also includes Rammel Chan (Walter),Christiana Clark (Nikka Washburn), Alejandra Escalante (Laura Cram), Jessie Fisher (Susan Feld) and Erik Hellman (Seton Cram).

About the Production:
John and his daughter Caitlyn are birders. As they scan the skies over their backyard in suburban Maryland looking for elusive birds, years go by. Relationships begin and end. Children grow up and parents age. The climate and the world change in small and vast ways. Birds of North America takes a close look at the relationship of a father and daughter over the course of a decade as they struggle to understand the parts of one another that defy understanding.

About the Artists:
Anna Ouyang Moench (Playwright, she/her) is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter. Her plays include Your Local Theater Presents: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Again, Man of God, Birds of North America, Mothers and Sin Eaters. Anna’s work has been produced at the La Jolla Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Geffen Playhouse, East West Players, the Playwrights Realm, NAATCO at the Public Theater, A Red Orchid Theater Company, The Gift Theatre, and many others. She is a former Jerome Fellow at the Playwrights’ Center, Van Lier fellow at the Lark and Page One fellow at the Playwrights Realm. Awards include two 2023 WGA Awards for her work on Severance (Apple TV+), the 2020 Steinberg Playwright Award, the Gerbode Special Award in the Arts, the Paul Stephen Lim Playwriting Award from the Kennedy Center, and the NYFA Award in Playwriting/Screenwriting. Anna received her MFA in Playwriting from UCSD and now lives in Los Angeles with her family.
Kirsten Fitzgerald (Director, she/her) is a proud member of the Ensemble at A Red Orchid Theatre and has served as the Artistic Director since 2008. “ “Altars” is a commemoration and celebration of those who have passed, the exhibition itself existing as its moniker. But Carina Vargas-Nuñez aims not to entrap memories; rather, they pay homage to them—honoring generational stories and traditional practices while allowing new narratives to emerge from their explorations.
Just as trails of thread and swaths of paint lead the viewer’s eye from one motif to the next, pathways embody the nature of diaspora; neverending, they entwine culture, history, and family together.
The artist embroiders devotional portraits in the same manner their foremothers did, honoring the lives of those who passed down such knowledge, culminating in a profound tribute aptly titled “Altars.”
Vargas-Nuñez’s work is imbued with deep veneration and respect for those who came before them—and, despite it all, reveals the persistence of life, which endlessly and reverently carves itself from loss.

About the Artist
Carina Vargas-Nuñez is a multidisciplinary artist who employs paint and textiles to delve into the tapestry of identity, disability, and family history.
She has used artistic expression from a young age to process their experience with disability, and envision worlds outside of the constraints imposed by their complex health challenges. This world building has continued into their practice today, where the artist uses bright colors and defined lines to illustrate narratives aimed at better understanding their sense of self.
Through elements of symbolism and magic realism, the images she constructs are crafted from stories of their family’s migration from Cuba, their journey with queerness, and their history with cultural mythology and spirituality.
Carina Vargas-Nuñez is currently based in Chicago, Illinois.
