Almost Summer in the City

Just finished up a really intense legal project that was supposed to be 8 weeks but went into 11 weekends (i.e. working 7 days a week  - last weekend’s Holiday was on standby included). Got the word late last Friday.

How did yours spend this (would have been) the 12th weekend?! The first day, Saturday, slept in and stayed in and truly relaxed for the first time in months; did nothing except binge watch our latest extras series and research play time options for the foreseeable future.

Caught some sights and sounds today, including the closing weekend of Matisse’s “Jazz” “Rhythms in Color” @ The Art Institute of Chicago, which was fabulous. #ArtHealsTheSoul #Jazz! Got lots of new great photographs in our almost summer in the city photo shoot of Michigan Avenue.

Stopped by Stan’s Donuts and had one of their  glutenless blueberry frosting donuts. (Theirs are actually good!) And caught a freebie advance movie screening of “Power Ballad” … it was okay but not like the WOW! of “DWP2,” so won’t write about it too much here.

LOOKING FORWARD …

WE hit the press preview for the O Center this week; use up our “Hamilton” anniversary lottery won tix in The Big Apple; and enjoy family time there too at a celebration of a member’s another time around the sun.

Hit me up if you want to do EATS… or a movie or a show or a day trip somewhere R&R… rest of June is lookin’ GOOD! #EnjoyLife

About the Production

When a prodigal son returns to blue collar New England, his homecoming sets off a spiraling crisis for two families, threatening not only their relationships but their very identities. In Mia Chung’s wildly inventive Catch as Catch Can, three actors take on six roles, bridging generation and gender, in a theatrical tour-de-force that upends the kitchen sink drama and asks what happens when we refuse to play the roles we’re prescribed. Spanning hilarity, stunning virtuosity and outright horror, this ferocious Chicago premiere – led by an all-ensemble cast – must be witnessed to be believed.

The creative team includes Andrew Boyce (Scenic Design), Izumi Inaba (Costume Design), Yuki Nakase Link (Lighting Design), Mikhail Fiksel (Sound Design), Kate DeVore (Dialect and Voice Coach), Jonathan L. Green (Dramaturg), Patrick Zakem (Creative Producer), Elise Hausken (Production Manager), JC Clementz, CSA (Casting), Laura D. Glenn (Production Stage Manager) and Jaclynn Joslin (Assistant Stage Manager). For full cast and creative team bios, click here.

About Steppenwolf Theatre Company

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier Ensemble Theater with 50 members who are among the top actors, playwrights and directors in the field. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions have made this theatre legendary. From the 1980 phenomenon of Balm in Gilead, to The Grapes of Wrath, August: Osage County, Downstate, The Brother/Sister Plays, and now, the 2025 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Purpose, Steppenwolf Theatre has had a long-running and undeniable impact on American Theatre and Chicago's cultural landscape. Founded in 1975 by Terry Kinney, Jeff Perry and Gary Sinise, Steppenwolf started as a group of young people in their teens and early 20s performing in the basement of a church. Today, the company's artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theatre, whose vitality is defined by its appetite for bold and innovative work. Every aspect of Steppenwolf is rooted in its Ensemble ethos, from the intergenerational artistic programming to the multi-genre performance series LookOut, to the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf Education and Engagement which serves nearly 15,000 teens annually. While grounded in the Chicago community, more than 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin. Steppenwolf also holds accolades that include the National Medal of Arts, 14 Tony Awards, two Pulitzer Prize-winning commissions and more. Led by Artistic Directors Glenn Davis and Audrey Francis, Executive Director E. Brooke Flanagan and Board of Trustees Chair Keating Crown — Steppenwolf continually redefines the boundaries of live theater and pushes the limits of acting and performance.

“Martin Wong: Chinatown USA” Major Exhibition Sheds New Light on the Art of Martin Wong On View at Wrightwood 659, April 17, 2026 – July 18, 2026

“Martin Wong: Chinatown USA”

Major Exhibition Sheds New Light on the Art of Martin Wong

On View at Wrightwood 659, April 17, 2026 – July 18, 2026

By Rieny G. Cualoping

Wrightwood 659 hosts exhibitions on socially engaged art and architecture, on issues facing LGBTQ+ communities, and on Asian art and architecture. Located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood in a building transformed by Pritzker Prize winner Tadao Ando.

Yesterday (April 16, 2026), I was treated to a Preview of the fantastical new Wrightwood 659 exhibition, “Martin Wong: Chinatown USA,” which opens to the public April 17, 2026. Located at beautiful 659 West Wrightwood Avenue, in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, the exhibition focuses on “an underexplored through-line in the practice of visionary Chinese American artist Martin Wong (1946-1999): his fascination with Asia through Chinatowns as personal, mythical cityscapes.Wong explored these spaces—filled with Asian art and architecture as adopted in the United States amid the explosion of street culture in San Francisco and New York in the late 20th century—as amalgams of memory, identity, and queer and pop-culture narratives.”

The first U.S. museum exhibition devoted to Wong since 2017, “Martin Wong: Chinatown USA” is curated by Yasufumi Nakamori, PhD, with Ashley Janke, Assistant Curator, Wrightwood 659. Nakamori is an experienced museum leader, curator and noted scholar of modern and contemporary Asian art from cross-disciplinary and transnational perspectives.

Presented by the Halsted A&A Foundation, the exhibition takes it title from the artist’s 1993 exhibition at the downtown Manhattan gallery P·P·O·W, which still represents the artist’s estate today. Only six years later, Wong died of an AIDS-related illness at the age of 53. Since then, his reputation has continued to grow as a queer painter and poet who traversed identities and sampled a dizzying array of cultural references. Critical attention, however, has largely focused on his paintings of the Lower East Side, and the artists, poets, and immigrants in this neighborhood. Far less recognized are the Chinatown- and Asia-inspired paintings, drawings, and sculptures he created throughout his career.

Chinatown USA features more than 100 paintings, drawings, ceramic works, and photo collages, complemented by videos and artifacts, among many other subjects of interest.

Martin Wong: Chinatown USA” is on view atWrightwood 659, April 17, 2026 – July 18, 2026.

Savannah Guthrie Returns to ‘Today’ Anchor Desk Amid Mom’s Disappearance and Says ‘It’s Good to Be Home’: ‘Ready or Not, Let’s Do the News’

By Zack Sharf

Savannah Guthrie returned to NBC‘s “Today” on April 6 amid the continued disappearance of her mother, Nancy. Joined by co-anchor Craig Melvin, Guthrie got right into the news and did not spend any time addressing the ongoing investigation into her mother’s whereabouts. Guthrie tee’d up the morning’s big stories, from Trump’s war in Iran to inflated gas prices, the Artemis II mission to journey around the moon, Prince William and Kate Middleton attending their first Easter service in three years and more.

“It is good to be home,” Guthrie declared afterward, the only nod to her absence at the top of the show. “Ready or not, let’s do the news.”

“So good to have you home,” Melvin added.

About 20 minutes into the broadcast, Guthrie and Melvin threw to Al Roker for the morning’s first weather update. “I just like looking over here,” Roker said while looking at Guthrie in a loving nod to her return. She replied, “Good morning, sunshine.”

‘Chicago Fire,’ ‘Chicago PD,’ ‘Chicago Med’ Renewed at NBC

“Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” and “Chicago Med” have all been renewed at NBC, Variety has learned.

The renewals will bring “Chicago Fire” to its 15th season, “Chicago PD” to its 14th, and “Chicago Med” to its 12th. All three shows are slated to return for their new seasons in the fall for the 2026-2027 broadcast season.

The renewals, which were all seen as a lock for some time, have come down the pike even earlier than they usually do. NBC has typically announced pickups for the “One Chicago” franchise in April ahead of the NBCUniversal upfront presentation to advertisers, which takes place in May.

All three shows remain ratings stalwarts on the NBC primetime lineup, even this late in their runs. They continue to power NBC’s Wednesday night schedule, airing back-to-back. On March 4, NBC aired another “One Chicago” crossover event, with all three shows hitting season highs in total viewers as a result.

Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment maintains a very strong relationship with NBC under the company’s rich overall deal with Universal Television. Renewals for “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: SVU, and “Law & Order: Organized Crime” are all still pending.

The cast of “Chicago Fire” includes Taylor Kinney, Miranda Rae Mayo, David Eigenberg, Christian Stolte, Dermot Mulroney, Hanako Greensmith, Jocelyn Hudon, Joe Miñoso, and Brandon Larracuente. “Chicago PD” stars Jason Beghe, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, LaRoyce Hawkins, Benjamin Levy Aguilar, Amy Morton, and Arienne Mandi. And “Chicago Med” currently stars Oliver Platt, Luke Mitchell, S. Epatha Merkerson, Steven Weber, Sarah Ramos, Jessy Schram, and Darren Barnet.

All three shows are produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment. Wolf and Peter Jankowski executive produce all three shows. Allen MacDonald and Stephen Hootstein are executive producers on “Chicago Med.” Gwen Sigan, Chad Saxton, Gavin Harris, and Beghe executive produce “Chicago PD.” And Andrea Newman, Reza Tabrizi, and Matt Whitney executive produce “Chicago Fire.” >>

How ‘One Chicago’ Pulled Off an Epic Crossover to Score a Season High of 6.4 Million Viewers (EXCLUSIVE)

By Emily Longeretta

The teams behind “One Chicago” had another successful crossover this week — and it wasn’t an easy one to produce.

“Chicago Fire,” which kicked off the three-hour event on March 4, drew 6.3 million total viewers on NBC, with “Chicago Med” following with 6.4 million and “Chicago P.D.” closing out with 6.1 million. Each show hit season highs, and the best numbers the franchise has seen in over a year. They also don’t include streaming viewers on Peacock.

The crossover followed a mysterious chemical attack that wiped out an airplane full of passengers, putting all of the first responders in serious danger. It also saw the return of Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos, the “Chicago P.D.” actors who portrayed Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton, respectively, and left in 2022 and 2024.

To pull off the massive event, produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, they chartered a Boeing 737-800, filling it with 110 passengers. Each day, an FX makeup team used around 400 prosthetics on the passengers, and made 3,000 gel capsules filled with sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and red powdered Kool-Aid.

But that was just one of the hurdles.

“Logistically, I think this was the toughest [we’ve ever done] because, in big part, due to when we shot it. This is one of the first times we’ve actually had to shut down production because it was too cold to shoot. It was insane,” Rebecca McGill, EVP of Wolf Entertainment and co-ep of all “One Chicago” series, tells Variety. “We were supposed to shoot at the airport for five days in a row, and we ended up shutting down two days early, because the temperatures predicted for the next day were just unbearable. And literally, they were calling it Chi-beria. It was colder than Antarctica. You couldn’t be outside.”

The scheduling of the crossover is a heavy lift every year. This time, there were multiple cast members shooting different episodes of their respective shows — all over Chicago — who then had to also be on set for the crossover the same day. That, on top of losing days in production due to the weather, meant production bled into the weekends, including Super Bowl Sunday.

“That was when we could get the actors for all of those big hospital scenes in the waiting room. They made a really nice day of it,” McGill says. “There were the big screens and the monitors in the exam rooms had the Super Bowl on, so it was a fun way to watch the crossover promo during the game that NBC gifted us — as we were still shooting it.”

The team watched the full event on Thursday, Feb. 26, and realized the episodes were short on runtime. With that, they called the writers, who reached out to the showrunners and line producers; they came up with three scenes that were shot on Friday, Feb. 27 — five days before it aired. The air traffic control scenes in the opening were filmed on Saturday, Feb. 28.

“Everybody wants to get it right — everybody wants to make it great,” McGill says. “So we do what we have to do.”

(3/4/26) Yours was lucky enough to film TWO different segments for the highly anticipated NBC TV One Chicago 2026 Crossover, airing tomorrow, WEDNESDAY, March 4, 2026 7-10 p.m. CST, 8-11 p.m. EST (and next day on Peacock)!

BLINK if you see me! Yours plays a concerned family member in a “Chicago Fire” segment filmed on the “Chicago Med” set at a counter; and then also one filmed in a “Chicago Med” segment filmed on the “Chicago PD” set, at the information counter at District 21, in a scene featuring Amy Morton as Sgt. Trudy Platt! (YOURS GOT MY OWN MARK for Platt’s several minute long dialogue in that one; filmed right in the front row, so more likely to stay seen in this scene, over the other quickie one!)  (“Reckoning, Part II,” Epi 1117)

Yours was not one of the hundreds of BG actors who filmed the triggering incident in the “Chicago Fire” opening segment scenes but heard about how DOPE it was!

CANNOT WAIT to see it all!
